Unique Website Design - The Right Price

Back

A unique website design usually means that most if not all of the work is going to be custom. Chances are, that rules out cheap; you are going to want some impressive graphics and useful functions, and those carry a cost. However, your website needs not be particularly expensive, if you know how to go about getting the best price. For that, we need to investigate some of the ways websites are priced.

I've discussed what I tend to call "value meal" pricing often enough in previous articles, but since they don't represent a single linear work, a brief revisit is in order. Quite simply, these are the sort of pricing packages where you get relatively similar coding, graphics, and other major features, but increases in things like reseller hosting and number of pages. At certain points, you might get improvements in primary features. It's not unlike a fast food value meal; the burger stays the same, but you get more fries and a larger drink with each step up. As you may expect, these sorts of pricing plans are hardly conductive to unique website design; if you are going to be paying extra, it should be for more graphics and better coding, not for more pages (the easiest thing for a web designer to provide) or better hosting (which is probably going to be worse than just going to a dedicated web host anyway, and more expensive to boot).

So in most cases, if you are going for a unique website, you are going to be asking for a pricing quote. Ideally, the site you visit will provide you with at least some guidelines so you know what you're getting into, although this is not always the case. In any event, what has to be remembered is that the quote is going to be based on the sort of site you describe originally. Naturally, there is going to be some degree of communication gulf here; you aren't the professional web designer, so you probably aren't sure what rates what or exactly the sort of services you will need.

The trick, thus, is to be prepared. With luck, some amount of this preparation will come from browsing the designer's website, or reading some articles not unlike this one to give you a feel for the sorts of things you can get to improve your unique website design. Even better would be to talk with the designer, ask them about their services, about what you can get for what price. Try to prioritize the features and functions you want included in your site. When in doubt, put your budget on the table, but don't include it just as a method of learning what the designers will charge for your site; instead, turn the tables and ask them what they will give you for that amount.

Preparation is especially useful because it lets you know what you can get where, and compare prices more effectively. It lets you get a feel for how you want your website to work, and figure out which designer will come closest to your vision and your budget. It also means that the site that you describe will be the same as the site you purchase. Remember that a quote is based on your description, but the final price of a website could very well vary if you wind up adding on or changing your mind during the project (although with luck, you will find a website designer who will go to lengths to keep the cost as close to the quote as possible even if additional work is required).

A unique website design is as likely as any to require significant coding, graphic design, and other work. As such, it is as likely as any to entail a significant price. Don't go into negotiations blind! By learning what you can about the options and the process, you can seek out the best price and get the most accurate initial quote. As if often the case, when it comes to unique website design, preparation and understanding are key to getting the right price.
